Big Fish photographed in the Heavy Rain
Posted by Gillies on Saturday November 8, 2008 at 04:16 PM

During a recent fishing trip down to the Isle of Harris one night to fish for Common Skate from the shore, it was a horrendous night with the rain lashing down, my friend caught a 139 lb Male Common Skate, and I was busy photographing it with the Canon 20D and 550ex Flash Gun, praying that it was not going to be a victim of the wet elements ... I was to scared to risk the 5D.

The 20D and 550ex handled the rain just great .... but in my mind it was just about at it's limits, and was out in the rain just as long as it could have been, both the body, lens and Flash Gun were dripping wet.  A good wipe down with towel, and left to dry, and thankfully it is all still going great !!!!

Here are a few photos of the Common Skate with Gordon Mackenzie whom caught it, and it swimming away back out to sea ... as you can see, it was pretty heavy rain.

All photos shot in complete darkness at ISO 400, F11, 1/160 and Flash Gun pumped up to +1 and 1/3.

Fancy Dress Halloween Party Snaps
Posted by Gillies on Saturday November 8, 2008 at 03:37 PM

On October 31st (Halloween) in Stornoway Sea Angling Club a Fancy Dress Halloween Party was held in aid of Cancer Research UK.  I was asked to come along and take some snap shots, no fancy photographs or processing ... just very basic snap shots of everyone in their various costumes etc....

The photographs of the event can be viewed in the Events section of Galleries on the web site, or by simply clicking on the link below....

If you are feeling a little flush, and enjoyed looking at those photographs, please make a donation to Cancer Research at the link below...

A fun night was had by all, and there were some great costumes there, people made a great effort, and well done to event organiser Eileen Matheson.

For the photographers out there, most of the photographs were shot at ISO 400 to ISO 800, F2.8 to F8 and at a shutter speed of 1/60 to 1/160th (Manual Mode) and using the Flash Gun to either brighten things up or counter the variable light.

Sofa and Table in the Loch!
Posted by Gillies on Tuesday October 7, 2008 at 01:06 AM

At the weekend an odd scene appeared right in the middle of a loch on the outskirts of Stornoway, a sofa complete with cushions and a table complete with two bottles of wine, and two wine glasses .... The scene (if that is the right words to describe it) was set up on rocks out in the middle of Loch Airigh na Lic.  Very well done to whoever was having a bit of fun, and put it all together ... I took a few photographs of the scene.

The photographs I took appeared in the Monday the 6th of October edition of the Scottish News Paper - Daily Record.  Here is a link to what was written in the article. http://www.dailyrecord.co.uk/news/news-feed/2008/10/06/sofa-so-good-86908-20777456/

From the look of the top photo, the Sea Gulls seem to be making good use of it all!!!

Newly Designed Web Site finally Online!!!
Posted by Gillies on Friday September 26, 2008 at 07:28 PM

I have finally got around to putting together a new web site, and adding some new photos..... the old web site has been looking pretty tired for a long time now, and I have not uploaded any new photos to it since the end of last year.

So a new site was long overdue.

For the design of the new web site I went for a very basic site, rather than giving in to the temptation to make one of those Flash based web sites, with eye candy such as fancy animations and music.  The design of the web site has more of an emphasis on the photographs themselves, and having them laid out in an easy to view manner.  If anyone has any problems viewing photos in the Gallery section, or any problems with the usage of the web site at all, please let me know.

I have added a Blog to the web site mainly because I am usually taking photographs of something or other every week, and these photos have no place anywhere in the gallery, so I can post them here in the Blog instead.  As well, as making posts on this, that and the other things regarding photos I take...  so please feel free to leave comments if you wish.

There are a number of photos I still have to upload such as a number of events for the Events section, and a new Fine Art section with some photos that people have requested to see.

The shopping basket section of the web site, I am still testing before I put it online, it should appear online over the next week or so.

Hope there is a photograph or two here that people find nice ....
